I only played SH 1. How is SH 4 related to the first 3?

in nearly no way at all. it was origionally gonna be another survival horror but they changed the room

yeah, Sh4 was supposed to be another game, but then it turned to a SH. The relation with the others games is basically about a newspaper in SH2, that talked about a killer names Walter Sullivan who killed 2 children (this has to do with SH4). And Dahlia Gillespie from SH1 was the person to show Walter the Apartment where he was born, making him think that it was his real Mother. ^_^ hope this helped
