I LOVE the XJ, I wish we still had ours
Your right, I should have said "Bronco" was only a two door. But you are making my point, There wasn't that much out there to compete with the Jeep Cherokee in the mid 80's
To be more precise, it would be the Bronco II. The regular Bronco was designed on Ford's F-series truck platform while the Bronco II was on the same platform as the Ranger.
The XJ is the only platform I know of where the pickup truck (Jeep Comanche) was based on the SUV. Everyone else had it the other way around: SUV based on pickup truck.
So far ahead of its time, the engineers even considered *rollover risk* back in the very late 1970s when they were beginning designs!

that's crazy
Yeah, crazy like a fox!
That's Jeep or, rather, Jeep before it was screwed up by Chrysler.
lol so do you mean the Cherokee is a uni body or body to frame
The Cherokee is unit body instead of the traditional body-on-frame.
The advantage was supposed to be greater structural rigidity and strength along with lighter weight.
that's cool so it was advance for its time
Yep, like Panasonic it was "just slightly ahead of our time."
And, I have a lot of respect for a design that is so solid and proven that even Chrysler couldn't screw it up for the most part when they took over Jeep.
