Exposition Universelle 1889: Rue du Caire les Almees

Video Title : Exposition Universelle 1889: Rue du Caire les Almees
Description : 1889: L'Exposition Universelle, the French World's Fair, commemorated the Centennial of the French Revolution. The Eiffel Tower, Edison's Electricity Pavillion and "La Rue du Caire" drew millions of visitors to "The City of Lights" during the 6 months it was open. Those lights allowed people to visit after dark and the scandalous "danse du ventre" by the "almees" was particularly enticing... This film was created in 2003 for the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington DC, for an exhibit about the women impressionist, Berthe Morisot, whose work was shown at the Fair.

Thank you very much for this rare video I love it 5* and more
Included in this French World's Fair were exhibits from their North African territories, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. They, too, featured "la danse du ventre." The map includes the countries whose dances were represented under that Europeanized nomenclature.
Beautiful description of ghawazee dancers... One downside tough... the geographical map of the 'middle east' it is not middle east at all, but NEAR EAST plus North Africa... I am amazed to see how in America everybody calls the near east as middle east and subsequently the oriental dance as 'middle eastern dance'... How could anyone place Morocco in an 'eastern' province, when it's arabic name itself means 'west' ? Middle east does exist, but further away...
The description of Middle Eastern dance by a person in 1889, is real gem!
I'm impressed. Your voice was excellent. Music was great. Photos were exquisite!
wow this film is 100 years older than me :)
Yes, this photo and the one after it were taken from the fair done 4 years later in Chicago. But Sol Bloom hired many of the dancers from Paris for his show in the US, so I took the liberty of showing actual faces I was not able to obtain from Paris. In the larger picture, four years made little difference in the clothes and attitudes of the performers.
FYI, the photograph at 5:33 is from the Chicago Colombian Exposition of 1893 (which also had a Cairo Street exhibition) not Paris. I wrote a graduate research paper last spring on the "danse du ventre" at the 1893 Fair.
Absolutely right about Lebanon. It was done for a museum show with younger children who knew where Lebanon was but not "the Levant"
This is great--I showed it to my students as an example of how Middle Eastern dance was viewed. My only thing is that Lebanon as a country didn't exist during that time frame.
This is incredible. Thank-you. I will blog about this straight away!
Great video!!! This is the start of La Belle Époque in France in my opinion.
Wow thank you for fixing it up then for all of us to enjoy... did a great job!!!
Wow! What a treasure you have there! Thank you! Thank you!
Very nice video! Thank you!
thanks for that, really well done. Funny to hear from that point of view someones experience of Middle Eastern music and dance! Cheers.
Egypt? Fun to listen to and well made though!
I created the movie and voice over track and own the copyright to them. Many of the pictures were photographs taken at the time that I found in books of the period. Those I purchased in France.
