About three years ago, the hospital incorporated the concept of a no-wait ER. First introduced on the West Coast, the no-wait ER tries to accomplish what is implied in its name. Upon arrival, a patient is evaluated by a nurse and then brought back to the ER. There, instead of in the waiting room, the patient is registered by a staff member using a portable computer that sends the information via telemetry to the hospital's database.
Federspiel said there was a 20 percent increase in volume as soon as the no-wait ER program was initiated. The hospital handles about 35,000 ER patients per year.
