The explosion would've looked like a mini nuke going off. If you see what some of the other big rockets malfunctions look like, the fireball was immense. Surprisingly, none of them carrying people ever exploded. The Challenger technically "disintegrated" not exploded.

When JFK made his anouncement the technology to go to the moon was not yet available. Much of it had to be invented along the way. However American scientists believe it was theoretically possible, and JFK declared the goal to fly to the moon in under 10 years based on faith and belief! To this day I am in awe at what a nation can achieve when united and intensely focused on a clear singular goal. Imagine what we can achieve if the whole planet united this way!
