I'm going to correct my earlier statement: If you watch the episode all the way through you see that many of the characters are doing the black face thing.
Bugs Bunny is imitating a famous white "black face" performer named Al Jolson. His fasmous line was to get down on his knees and say "Mammy, Mammy..."
this one was on the Merrie Melodies VHS that I own.
It's all a shtick,it's makeup. In that time people used to do stuff like that in shows. Hell, even black people wore the black face makeup.
Actually, he's impersonating Al Jolson, who used to do Vaudeville acts in blackface makeup. I do agree with your assessment, though. I might recognize it for what it is, but my kids sure wouldn't.
he's just impersonating a famous african american in that era that really isn't offending. besides, there's more crude shit out there and like any kid is gonna notice if it's racist or not. when i was a little kid and watched bugs bunny cartoons i wouldn't notice it.
"lexophile: a lover of cryptic words". That's the pure essence of the Bugs Bunny cartoons and his creators with brilliant minds working their twisted humor to uplift adults spirits. Not for kids!
