Actually he was quite opinionated about the influence religion had on peoples morals. I don't know the exact quote, but it was something like "if people do things just for fear of punishment (hell) or for reward (heaven) it is completely wrong.. (parphrased of course)

Um I dough that's what he meant, my opinion is that he knew that there was a god, but not this religious god we have let to believe. I don't know what god is, and the one who lectures the meaning of GOD, then he him self is lost. Not once did he say that he was atheist, it's just the way you interpret his quotes to your own meaning.
