Severn Suzuki speaking at UN Earth Summit 1992

Video Title : Severn Suzuki speaking at UN Earth Summit 1992
Description : Raised in Vancouver and Toronto, Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been camping and hiking all her life. When she was 9 she started the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO), a small group of children committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. They were successful in many projects before 1992, when they raised enough money to go to the UN's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Their aim was to remind the decision-makers of who their actions or inactions would ultimately affect. The goal was reached when 12 yr old Severn closed a Plenary Session with a powerful speech that received a standing ovation. more information on http://www.davidsuzuki.org BigUp to my friend Sebastian Sturm for letting me use his song... yes bredgin, TELL THEM THE TRUTH!!! http://www.sebastian-sturm.com http://www.myspace.com/sebastiansturm

i was recently in a musical for peace child international and my character was named after Severn. she's a wonderful and intelegent human being and now i finally understand how one person can make a big difference.

From what I've heard, necessity is the mother of all invention (except the v-12 tomahawk motorcycle), if we can't out invent our destructiveness we aren't as smart as we think we are and nature wins. Consume away.

Good choice of song at the end.

The conversations below have all the tone and intelligence of a group of bacteria sittin' around chewin' the agar in a petri dish. If we have no more insight or foresight than a spirochete, perhaps it's best if our "culture" does not persist!!!

I was giving a dumbed down explanation of the cause and effect of our environmental interaction for simple minded bacteria lovers like yourself.

Andrew, your statement was cogent and not among the dross, gross and verbose drivel I was refering to. While I do love certain bacteria, my passion runs strongest for fermenting yeasts.

Ah, I took it as a blanket statement and was almost offended...not really.

technology IS the rapacious nature of man

You must mean technology is the byproduct of man's rapacious nature. Everyone in school learns that animals can out breed the capacity of their environment ability to sustain them, and we fail to realize this applies to us as well...that because we are human we are somehow immune to laws of nature. People will die off when nature can no longer support us and our ways and those left will continue the species.

agreed - of course, our ecological collapse is more complex than simply outbreeding capacity. What I meant is that it is unrealistic that technology buffer our rapacious nature, because as you said, it is a symptom of our rapacious nature, and it is our constant modification of nature to fix our problems that further destroys nature thus further destroying us. Alan Watts: "The only way to prevent the earth from absolute destruction is stop trying to prevent the earth from absolute destruction."
