Eritrea Cycling Championship Race (Dec 16, 2007) and Daniel Teclehaimanot won the race: Three time Zoba Maekel cycling champion Yonas Zeckarias (better known as Halabay -- Milk Man) had been the dominant figure in Asmara cycling championship up until 1997. That was the year he knocked off his unprecedented treble success in style. For that reason, he became master of the game. And almost all Asmarians worshipped him as their 'god'. He meant everything to them as he was their idol. The then crowd attendance that set a record to this date sang 'Halabay . . . Halabay ...!' in glorifying his victory. And they never got quenched by his overlapping sprinting techniques as they love to see him winning and winning every time. He was an incredible champion on the road races and king on the hills as he hammered his three consecutive championship victories. I wonder if people had fallen crazy for the seven-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong the way they did for Halabay.
Ten years after this historic achievement, Micheal Tiku from EriTel became the very close contestant to line up with Yonas Zeckarias' treble championship crown at the 2007 cycling championship. Considering his previous two championship crowns of the year 2005 and 2006, all eyes are on Micheal Tiku at the ongoing 2007 cycling championship. But there is one fact. No matter how hard Micheal Tiku fought, it looks unimaginable for him to gain as many supports as Yonas Zeckarias did 10 years back. Of course if he managed to grab another championship victory on this cycling contest, he would be able to equal with Yonas Zeckarias' record.
When the 2007 cycling championship uncorked on 25 November 2007, in the first three stages that are already completed, Micheal Tiku was seen struggling in gaining his rhythm. He came out bare handed in the first two Asmaria criterium contests. In the Asmara-Adi quala-Asmara route however, he stood 9th to score his first two points. This has currently made him stand 18th overall, 18 points behind the leader Meron Russom from Red Sea Sports Club.
The contest is still going on. Lots of unexpected things could unfold. But it has already looked a miracle for Micheal Tiku to overtake the group of riders queuing right in front of him and claim victory for the third consecutive year.
Nowadays, 2007 championship is burning with its fierce competition. Lots of super talented youngsters are making things so difficult for the experienced rider which is purely ironic. Merhawi Gebrhiwet, Micheal Tiku's teammate who is already crowned tour champion this year in his first ever appearance is one of those young catalysts bringing about a revolutionary change. He is now on the hunt for championship victory in the elite group standing second with only a point behind the leader. Merhawi has earned silver and bronze medals in three international competitions he participated in Kenya, Cameroon and Algeria. Dawit Haile and Aklilu Goitom from Asbeco; and Daniel Teclehaimanot from Debub cycling team are other youngsters within the least of 10 overall best riders.
The championship is now being led by Meron Russom who is gaining big fame for the relentless effort he is showing within and out side the town. Adulis cycling team is leading the team competition followed by Asbeco that is 9 points behind and Eritel 19 points behind.
On Sunday 16 December, 2007 cycling champion will resume with an 'elimination' Asmara criterium tough contest. This type of contest eliminates riders who are lagging behind at every round forcing the racers to sprint for a front seat every now and then. The last survival from this elimination contest claims victory and the last 10 survivals will keep points accordingly for themselves and for their teams.
