Actually, John wrote that line in the song as a sort of a way of making up with Paul after quite a few arguments. If you listen to the the song 'God' on the Plastic Ono Band album, he sings "I was the Walrus.".

anyone who has heard the spooky tooth version would never doubt it rivals the beatles. very dark but superb!
