I sugggest you give a listen to the original version circa 1955 by the incomparable Platters. First number one pop record by a black group.

I think most people have heard it. IMO, Freddie Mercury's version is better. His vocals are better than Tony Williams' and the music has more feel to it, more life. I don't like this video because the sound is scratchy. You should hear the studio version, it's better.
That being said, The Platters were a great group and they didn't get half the credit they deserved.

The reasons why he mimed: he didn't reach those notes live. But he never lied about this :)
With the passing of years, he experimented higher and higher singing in the studio (full voice, no falsetto). But that required silence, calm, and recording a little part after another. Sometimes in his songs you don't have time to breathe :)
Live, he used to lower them and privilege the show above the vocal execution.
A very honest man and great artist.

To those doubting it's real... it is.
This is the year Freddie had put up weight, before obviously losing it due to his illness.
And yes... he's miming, as he (almost) always did after retiring from live concerts in 1986. All his solo performances are mimed (the ones with Montserrat Caballè as well), except three songs he sang live with Cliff Richard at the Dominion Theatre (1988).
