I think it's fairly well established that his death was not caused by the water tank escape attempt. He had been ill for days before his last performance, and had been diagnosed with appendicitis prior to the show but insisted on performing against medical advice. His rapidly deteriorating medical condition left him unable to complete the escape, so an assistant freed him. He was then rushed to hospital where he died several days later, reportedly from peritonitis cause by a ruptured appendix.

I believe that you are basing Dr. Watson's character on the bumbling fool played by Nigel Green opposite Basil Rathbone. For a more accurate portrayal, check out any of the Sherlock Holmes episodes starring either David Burke or Edward Hardwicke opposite Jeremy Brett as Holmes. About Doyle-I believe he became unhinged after the death of his son and was desperate to be reunited with him. He was a victim of these fraudulent mediums as well. Still, his belief in this nonsense boggles the mind.

Doyle was a fool, like Dr.Watson in his novels.
