My theory is Hamburgler doesn't actually EAT them, he merely STEALS them. Mind you in the 80's he was mostly out on probation so you usually see him buying them, but you never see him actually EAT any of them do you? Like a cat bugler who sits in awe gazing over his/her catch, counting the gold coins, but never spending any of them.
