because new york is a big state. new york city is on a tiny island, next door is long island. All 3 make up New York, but when people only associate NY with the city, its kind of like, serious? I'm from Long Island, and when I say I'm from NY some automatically think I'm from the city...it's like, cmon, theres more to NY than NYC, if I was from the city I probably would've said it.
