This is footage taken from a UGA Study Abroad trip to Kruger National Park in South Africa in June 2007. Our group approached this big bull elephant from a distance. He came closer so we moved back to give him space. After sniffing around, he very unexpectedly charged right at us. Our guide raised his rifle and prepared to fire if needed. At 15 feet away, the elephant suddenly stopped, then turned and walked away. Our guide said in 15 years in the bush this was the closest he had ever come to shooting an animal. It was an amazing show of power from an amazing animal. Overall, a thrilling encounter.

I read that wild elephants having been hunted by man for years, they recognize rifles.
i would have shot that elephant so fast!!! and you're smart for carrying the gun, and your balls are the size of bowling balls for not shooting at least 5 shots at that big kahuna! please post more videos like this, next time shoot one for me though!
I would hate to think an elephant could've been killed just so you can get some footage.
We didn't approach the elephant to get some footage, and the last thing all of us would have wanted was to have it shot. We were studying elephants and we gave it plenty of space, but it kept advancing towards us. To avoid any conflict for both of us, our best option when it was close was to stay still. The charge was unexpected and unprovoked; our guide had never seen anything like it in 15 years of being in the bush. And he's never, ever shot any animal; the gun is for emergencies only.
You were lucky and the elephant too otherwise you had a dead elephant on your video.
