701C to 701D is almost 400 sph isnt it? either way the wah64 still has more power... reguardless... at least theyre still putting 701Ds into the 64's.
There is a 104 HP difference between the 701C and 701D. Increasing power does not make an aircraft better. Appropriately matched power is the key. Unnecessary increases in power are going to bring increase maintainence costs, increased fuel burn(thus decreased range and endurance), and in some cases decreased reliabilty. If the power is needed than it is a suitable trade off. If not, it is just a waste.
Cont: The high altitudes and heat of Afghanastan and Iraq are the first situations that are really causing us to be in truely power limited situations, as a result the engines are being upgraded. The 700 engine could do most of the necessary jobs, the 701D can do everything we need it to, there is no reason for more power.
Cont again: The WAH64 is a really nice aircraft and the rolls-royce engines certainly add a lot of power, I am not debating that. There are many reasons the rolls-royce engines are not used on the Apache and Blackhawk though. First of all, when the Blackhawk and Apache were being designed in the early 80's the Army picked the most reliable and proven engines of that day. While the rolls-royce engines are considered a reliableland proven platform today, 25 years ago that was not the case.
Cont yet again: Sure the military could spend the billions of dollars required to convert over every aircraft, but all new engine specific tools, set up new maintianence contracts, retrain personnell, etc...., but that seems like an awful lot to spend to gain 276HP. The longbow apache is an effective platform and there are not many reasons to upgrade it anymore.
I understand what you're saying. but reguardless of how many upgrades it gets, how well the pilots are trained and how effective the aircraft is... the apache hasnt been used for what it was designed for since 1991... popping tanks. the way the worlds looking it might get to pop some iranian tanks I'd like to be through WOFT by then.

well with the Block 3 coverting all of the electronic advancements as well as weight reduction, the 64's power to weight ratio is still not what it should be when compaired to a WAH64 so along with the block 3 enhancements i also think the engine and transmission needs to be revised.
