Christopher Lee in "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes"

Video Title : Christopher Lee in "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes"
Description : Video dedicated to Hobbitska. Here's the first appearance of Mr. Christopher Lee, one hour into the film, in Billy Wilder's excellent "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes". Mr. Lee plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's even smarter, mysterious older brother. Mr. Lee looks nothing like the character as described by Doyle and Paget, who depict him as a portly gentleman (so far Charles Gray, Mr. Lee's nemesis in "The Devil Rides Out" owns the role), but his performance is wonderful and it's a rare opportunity for him to show his talent for deadpan comedy.

wasnt mycroft suppposed to be fat?/

Actually yes, which makes Wilder's choice of Lee for the part quite puzzling, but his performance is amazing anyway.

I agree Lee is a great actor and makes a very interesting Mycroft, but I cant get out of my head the portly Mycroft portrayed in the original stories, with the reseding hairline and severe eyes..kinda pedantic I know. BTW thanx for posting this vid I love it. you can find this film in amazon right?

XD The only one who pwns Sherlock is his brother Mycroft. ^__^

Great movie!

This is a neat scene, all three characters are played in a cute kind of fashion--and the rivalry of the 2 brothers is almost childlike ^_^

Totally incorrectly, Lee's wikipedia entry states that he "had his head shaved bald" for the part...complete nonsense. Lee has worn a hair piece ( as did Peter Cushing ) for most of his career he is clearly suffering from male pattern baldness as early as the 1950's-he has a high forehead is receeding at the temples. What misinformation you routinely find on wikipedia.

I wonder why Lee didn't wear his customary hair piece in this film? I think it's the only film he appeared in in his naturally bald state. His hair pieces through the years have been pretty good he wears them when not making films, so it seems odd that he should've chosen to not wear one here.

I agree with you, even if I don't know his voice,in fact in Italy,we double foreign movies.

Still, Mycroft played no active part in the mystery in A Study in Terror, while he did in Private Life. And the way Study treats the Ripper case doesn't really make it stand out (it's very B-movie-ish, after all). It looked much more peculiar in Murder by Decree, no matter how many aspects about Holmes that one got wrong.
