Derek was the leader of the band. It was a completely different person. If you take a look at 'Layla and other assorted Love songs' it says this: Derek and the Dominoes (guitar: Eric Clapton).

Derek is not a person in the band. But there were many stories as to how "derek" was created. go look it up.
