A-10 Warthog, Thunderbolt II at Pilsung Range, S. Korea

Video Title : A-10 Warthog, Thunderbolt II at Pilsung Range, S. Korea
Description : Although the A-10 can carry a considerable weight of disposable stores, its primary built-in weapon is the 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun. One of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown, it fires large depleted uranium armor-piercing shells at a rate of about 4,200 rounds per minute (50 rounds per second during the first second, 70 rounds per second thereafter). The massive shells and high muzzle velocity allow the Thunderbolt II to destroy heavily armored main battle tanks with as few as six direct hits. The gun is accurate as well, being capable of placing 80% of its shots within a 20-foot wide circle from a distance of 1 mile while the aircraft is in flight.

whats the difference between the 30mm gatlyn gun and the vulcan cannon, that i believe the f-18 have mounted on them

The new A-10C has been refitted for all the new precision weapons. Improved engines and wings are in the works. I'm an A-10C weapons loader just returned from AL-Asad AB, Iraq. For the record, everything posted by lyingbastard is correct with 1 correction. The capacity of the 30mm GAU-8 is 1174 rounds, not 1200. We only put 1150 rounds into the plane for combat.

Most (54% or so) of those Chinese tanks are T-54s, which are Korean War vintage, not adequate against modern battle tanks. Besides that, each Warthog carries 1,200 rounds. If they were to put 50 rounds into a tank, which is severe overkill, those 400 aircraft could destroy 9,600 tanks without needing to come back and reload.

no, its classes as a gattling gun..

It is not classified as a gattling gun, it is classified as the GAU-8/A Avenger, Gatling-type rotary cannon.

er.... im not with the airforce (my dad was and im gonna be one too) but they are decommisioning the A10 in 2010 cuz its just... old. there have been many shot down due to its speed... that dont mean i dont love it. i was well pissed.

No, they aren't. They're scheduled to stay in service until 2028, because there aren't going to be enough F-22s and F-35s to cover the Air Forces obligations. Hell, the F-35 won't even enter service until 2013. There is a modernization plan to upgrade the existing Warthogs to extend their service life, the program is called "Hog Up" and is directed by USAF Lt. Col. Don Henry.

hondar that is not true i do not believe u work for the Air force... the do not want to get rid of the aircraft because it is the backbone in the operations in iraq. its saved countless lives and is still the best aircraft for striking fear into the enemy.

From the ground it sounds like the sky is farting.

Such a sick plane! Gotta be my favorite if I had to pick one. I love the sound of that gun: BRRAAAP! yer fukd.
