Yes..This is very interesting film and it is rarely shown. I've never seen it in a theater. My Father turned me on to "The Mechanic" when I was a kid..I always thought it was a very deep film with all of Bishop's philosophies and his poweres of observation. If you can find the novel it's a great read.

Rigging the stove was to get the gas to leak all over the apartment. He put some explosive in the book, but it wouldn't have been powerful enough to create that big of an explosion. When he shoots the book, it explodes, and ignites the gas setting the whole place on fire.
