The red and green flashing lights on the wings? They're port starboard lights, they show what way you're facing, how level the plane is, that its there [at night] etc...

I'm pretty sure the lights are just to designate yourself in a friendly area, and to determine which side of the aircraft you are looking at. But I'm not 100% sure.

But only at night, does it really matter if the lights are on during day?
