in the 1988 Olympics, the Soviets have lost to Finland on purpose because the USSR team already had secured the gold medals. But the Russians wanted Canada to finish without a medal. That's why the Soviets gave up that goal with a minute remaining and let Finland win 2-1. Finland got a silver medals and Canada finished only in 4th place which was a fiasco for the Canadians who hosted the Olympics and had a very solid team :) By the way, Russians thrashed Canada in the final round 5-0

Epic fail. Finland were sure to get a medal before this game. Soviets didn't lose on purpose but they were however hungover. ;)

Yeah we were pretty much outmatched. Looks like team Russia Finally got its shit together. It's funny how they used the very tactic that you hate so much and the game was pretty awful to watch (for finns). Congratulations etc.

yes they did tighten up in the 3rd and that made the game lame-ish, but it was ok since i already knew the outcome by then. Finland's style is to get the lead early then to play defense for the rest of the game (occasionally trying to score on turnovers) -- it was over after it was 2-0, you cant play defense to victory once you're 2 behind. the skill displayed on the first two goals (especially the first) made the game worthwhile to watch despite the shutdown in the 3rd.

Well they did trap the blue line throughout the game but attacked more in the 1st two periods. So it was more like a change in offensive activity than a change of tactics. Altogether very similar to the Torino olympic semifinal but with the opposite roles.
