For the record F1 in 1986 had no restrictions on power. A 1.5 Turbo V6 could run up to 5.3 bar boost in quaifying which would be about 1,350bhp. In race trim it was around 4.0-4.1 bar and 900-950bhp. From 1987 restrictions were added to reduce power down to 4.0 bar and then 2.5 bar in 1988 and around 630bhp all this in a car that weights 505kg.

To clear up some inacurate info on these posts the facts are Rally cars like this Lancia Delta S4 in 1986 had 480bhp and weight of 970kg with a midengine 4WD.Compare this to a front engined 4WD 2008Ford Focus WRC which has about 325bhp (restricted)1230kg weight (restricted)rules.Basically a 20year old car had 150bhp more weighed 300kg less a better handling set up!.Advances in the development of transmissions, engine management, turbo lag systems tyres have reduced the obvious disadvantge.

On a different clip i saw inside the engine bay and on the cam-cover it said "ABARTH" if anyone knows "were the engines made by fiat or lancia..

The cars were the reason too..just watch the video and imagine the stage with no cones.Even Henri(RIP) himself said in 1986 that thes4 was too fast to drive..

Absolutely awesome car. 1.8 liter four cylinder, supercharged+ turbocharged 480 hp. Incredible
They don't make them like they use to.

That Estoril myth was started by Hannu Mikkola and they were testing the S1 Quattro in Portugal 'near' but not 'on' the Estoril circuit.
They calculated their test track was about the same length as the race circuit and compared times. They were SLOWER but only by a few seconds. Seconds are huge in motor racing.
Any rally car is geared for a much lower top speed than any F1 so it accelerates harder but will redline in top gear at 120 mph or so.

Very well said.
