While the Bear was pretending to be searching for the ocean in the lava wilderness, the footage was actually taped a few hundred feet from the Crater Rim Drive on the summit of Kilauea.
These clips show the fissures in the SW Rift Zone near the summit of Kilauea at the 4000 foot elevation. The fissure scenes shown are all within 1/4 mile from the road. They are the same fissures shown in the Discovery Channel in the Man vs Wild episode set in Kilauea .
The episode follows an actor who plays a survival expert as he makes his way from Pu'u O'o to the ocean. This episode is available for viewing in youtube. You can see the scenes in the last ten minutes of the tv episode. (update: this episode is no longer available on youtube, reruns are no longer shown on TV, and is not for sale on DVD.)
Just as the actor is about to reach the ocean, he must cross the fissures to get to safety. But since the fissures are at the summit, the Discovery Channel moved that section of the island 19 miles and 4000 feet lower so that the actor could overcome this one last obstacle--a feat that has put Moses to shame.
Most of the episode was pretty faked up, but the last few minutes were beyond being a complete sham.
Update: The original concept was that Bear Grylls would be dropped into remote areas and make his way to civilization with no help. The Discovery Channel removed this episode and several others from circulation after they were shown to be fake. Other early episodes were edited to remove fake scenes and disclose that he received help from the crew. Disclaimers on recent episodes disclose that scenes are staged.

try harder to make him out as a fraud plz
If he isn't going to put himself in unnecessary danger, then why not walk 40 feet to the left and cross at the END of the rift, rather than on the lava bridge across it. What are you even saying?
clear evidence and you morons still defend bear, how blind do you have to be.
'he was in the sas' blah blah blah, yeh he was, and you know why he left? he broke his back para trooping, once again showing his disregard for safety.
lol. You know, you have NO idea about the circumstances surounding his accident. If you spent your time listening to what he was saying in his show, you would have understood that he and his unit were doing a jump into a forested area. His chute got caught in trees. He broke his back from the fall that ensued from trying to get down. No disregard for safety there. Just unluckiness.
And as I said, this evidence is far from clear to me. I am not discounting what vulcanochaser is saying but I think that despite his vast knowledge of the area around Kilauea he could be overlooking an area from which Bear was crossing that is farther away from the road.
One last thought, assuming that you are correct and the area where Bear crossed was less than a half mile away from a road, What would be the point of showing how to survive on a volcanic island if you dont touch upon as many of the areas that you could come accross while out there.
No watch the clip on ebaumsworld, where they show bear grylls crossing and then volcanochaser crossing. identical.
(cont)In the case of the big island, you would have to jump around from location to location. It does bother me a bit about the possiblity that this all may be true but I dont think that this consitutes labeling him a fraud.
"Man vs. Wild" has been repeatedly, explicitly, and specifically advertised as a demonstration of actual survival information that could 'save your life'. In reality, it is a soap. He isn't lost, it all staged and the information (most of the time) sucks big time. That's why he is a fraud.
"His chute got caught in trees. He broke his back from the fall that ensued from trying to get down. No disregard for safety there. Just unluckiness." If you navigate correctly, you will not end up in a tree. Secondly, why try to get down by yourself?
