He was... Have you played Myst IV? When you read his second journal (or was it the first? I think it was the one in the lakehouse...), he says, "My God, did we really kill so many people?" and, unlike Sirrus, his confinement pretty much turns him around.

Pity he died. I always thought he was a good person, despite his lunacy and mindless killing of random people.
