Aft Transmission, hydraulic pumps, generators, and APU are all back there. APU should have been shut down long before take-off so I would suspect hydraulic fluid or lube oil leak.

Looks like a HMM-265 aircraft on the Essex.

Should have landed in the water to put the flames out. ;)

I didn't know that stuff was flammible. I'll remember that next time I'm in one of those heaps.

Let me check my logbook for the buno, cannot remember.

This was not a engine fire. This fire erupted from the aft transmisson area. The two T-58 engines are located fordward of the hatch. This was more than likely started by a generator failure which i experenced in the late 70's. I was around 9,000 feet though.

It ruined an otherwise nice day off the coast of Monterey... Signed PAC
