You could save polys with UV mapping, but that's just useful for games I guess

how u select all the other faces i click on 1 then the othwer but it deselects other ... lil help ?

To subdivide, you press W then click on 'Subdivide'

if u wanna taper the squares(it ooks pretty cool if u do it right) which is pretty eassy just select the top faces and size them down a little bit, try it out and see how u like it
