What a shame it's in English...

I think the reason this seems more "musical theatre" than opera has many reasons:
-the male singing has a musical theatre slant to it
-the production, being kinda computer generated, looks manufactured, like a lot of musical theatre (as opposed to authentic)
-Magic Flute is a Singspiel, which is kind of an 18th century version of a musical
I think the current English version that they are doing at the Met, however, seems much more opera than musical theatre. It depends on the translation.

I love the queens of the night....They're magic!!!

Fantastic, wonderful

Wonderfully done, but it seems to be more musical than opera-which is sad.
|
yea, what is the difference between musical and opera again? Opera is supposed to be on a more epic scale right?
|
The 'modern' difference between an 'Opera' and 'Musical':The use of microphones are not [supposed] to be used in opera
plus a musical is something that was intended for the 'musical' stage rather than the operatic stage.
I have seen several productions of this opera, which can range from epic to just plain tacky. The english versions in my opinion just have an added tackiness that seems like the director wanted to go towards a 'broadway musical'.

ah ok thanks. Have you seen other movies for the magic flute?
|
Yes. I loved Ingmar Bergman's film version, it had a certain touch to it. The singers were not your typical opera singers, as they were really more like actors.
|
wow that sounds great, did it have that "epic"/ movie-like feel to it? I'll have to rent it sometime
