That was because the French expected the German army to March directly east from Germany into France, therefore facing the Maginot Line Defences. Instead the German army made a hook motion through Belgium and Holland, and came through the north of France, where the army had virtually no presence. Caught them off guard and took Paris in 6 weeks.

Well, the man was right. The French Army was considered the gold standard in the 1930s and they laid down in 1940. They should have been able to take at least a pound of flesh from the Germans, but they barely gave them more than a brisk exercise.
