I love the KInks, they were the dogs bollocks, and I hate to say this but The Falls version sounds a lot better than this... sorry.
Actually this version by the Kinks in thier "big band" era does sound a little like Canned Heat, at least at the beginning. Check out the original recording of this song. Its much faster and has a harder edge to it.
No, those guys are the step-children of the Kinks.
is it me or does this sound like the stepchild of CanndeHeat and TheGratefulDead?
cool
ray davis and his band or the kinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bleah!!
i love this song. the album it's from (Arthur) is a masterpiece (alright, ALL Kinks albums are masterpieces)!
Would have to agree with roylett. Ray and Dave also enjoyed Queensland, another Australian state while they were downunder and dedicated this tune to them both.
wow, i just checked the video out after reading your comment and i couldn't agree more. thanks for this post. i would also urge people to take a look at this video. just search tom dowd and click the first video, about the layla recordings.
This band has always been great.
ok..cheers!..viva the kinks anyway...
hey will you guys do me a huge favor and shut the fuck up
Watching Tom Dowd talk about his engineering on the Laila recording with Duane and Eric was a real eye opener for me.A special time in pop music recording history thats for sure.Watch the video on it sometime. Its worth it.
in my humble opinion duane allman was on mars in therms of guitar playing,fuck..how can you mix slide guitar virtuosity with hard rock, gospel, southern music on top of that JAZZ?..clapton was greater than dave but he imitated bb king with distorsion dave at one point was trying to emulate keith richard's live guitar playing (even he stated that on the stones biography book)under-rated?.try clarence white (byrds)..or mike bloomfield..east-west blows the shit out of waterloo sunset for sure
yep..he deserves recognition..but i got to say..better for dave to stay like that because the kinks are to me like the stones, the band or the beatles..great deal of those bands are focused on team work to produce timeless albums..wich is great because i would be pissed off if all critics get total focus on dave saying that it was the key to lola vs powerman..to me lola had awesome guitar playing, exquisite drumming, great bass, raging vocals..it was not about dave..they were the kinks! cheers!
But his guitar playing has been consistently spot on, and he has his own unique style, that's what he was saying. It's not that he's better than all those people, just that he deserves recognition.
this is why clapton is the best: for example..i dont think"no return"could do any justice against"dance the night away"(SAME YEAR!?clapton was on mars..dave was playing another bossa pop tune)plus cream concerts were a unique mix of blues, jazz, rock (for better or worse)accidentally helping to develop heavy metal.kinks live were raw but just standard mid 60's rock shows..
this is why he's no mentioned: for example...i dont think"no return"could do any justice against"dance the night away"(SAME YEAR!?clapton totally nails it..dave was playing another bossa pop tune)plus cream concerts were a unique mix of blues, jazz, rock (for better or worse)accidentally helping to develop heavy metal.kinks live were cool but just standard mid 60's rock shows..i guess
ajaj..fuck..from the official procol harum biography book it was reported that the allman brothers blew the shit out of the kinks and some other local bands on their first tour to canada on 1970..several people the local press stated that the allmans sounded more fresh, innovative, vocally better and instrumentally superior than the top billed ones..they also noted that the kinks sounded tired uninspiring through the entire arthur lola set. R.I.P duane allman, greatest guitarist ever!
well said, he does little rhythm bits in some kinks songs that put harrison et al to shame - untouchable
'victoria,was my queen'
You're absolutely so damm... right, Dave is also a great vocalist and provided the soul to Ray songs not only with his riffs but in vocals. This song VICTORIA is one of the real first tunes that impressed me in High School and ARTHUR album also the very first LP that impacted me. I'm still astonished, amigo....
Dave Davies is so much better than Clapton and so under-rated. He's up there in the best 5 lead guitarists of all time.
it's true. He's been consistently great for decades and he very rarely gets any credit for it.
