B-17 Bomber - Flying Fortress At Our Airport

Video Title : B-17 Bomber - Flying Fortress At Our Airport
Description : (UPDATE) The World War II Air Force B-17 aircraft "Sentimental Journey" is scheduled to be at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport on August 18-25 during this year's Corn Fest. According to an article in the June 18, 2008 online issue of the Daily Chronicle, those willing to donate around $425 can get the chance to fly in the airplane. All proceeds help the Commemorative Air Force, a nonprofit organization, continue to restore and preserve combat aircraft. (END UPDATE) This is a Boeing B-17 bomber, or Flying Fortress as it's known as. I saw it flying around yesterday morning so I went out to airport to take some pictures. Besides giving rides, they were also having a pig roast to help sponsor "Sentimental Journey". Forget the plane, it was worth going out there just for the lunch! I wished I had more time to stay around until they started flying again, especially since it was such a beautiful day. Maybe next time. I was in a big hurry to put this video together so I simply appended most of the clips I took in the order they were taken. I also tried to keep the length fairly short. I'll add more to this description a little later. Cheers!

At the beggining of the video there opening the bombay doors you can hear them say clear then you can here the doors open i know the sound im a lodmaster for the plane.....the guy at 1:40 talking to the lady in the pink is my dad he is a fcc for the plane

THAT'S OUR BABY Sentimental Journey from Mesa AZ and we love her!

i thought they stoped makeing those!

Sentimental Journey, seen her many times. My Dad and Grandpa knew her as US Forest Service Tanker 17. Goes to show what an amazina plane she is, expected to last 17 combat missions when she was built, but went on to fly tens of thousands of hours on fires (high-stress flying, just not getting shot at), and still flies today!

Same here. I don't like them either. The P-51 is no way near as beautiful as the Spitfire. Or better, really. Anyway...the B-17 isn't that good. It can only carry a small amount of explosive, and was a sitting duck for the ME-109 and FW-190. It isn't as even good-looking as the HE-111.

The RAF Lancaster is the bomber of the war. The B17 was a toy compared to it.

The Lancaster could carry the heaviest load, but it was poorly armed, could not fly as high, and was not as tough as the B-17. Doesn't mean it wasn't a good plane. I got plenty of respect for the Brits, Canadians, and Aussies who flew Lancasters and Halifaxes, just like I respect our guys who flew B-17s, B-24s, and B-29s.

I suggest you read some history, the part about how the Lancaster factory was saved.

Uh the B-17 was 1 ft. wider than the Lancaster 2.5 ft. longer and could carry more ordinance, how was the 17 a toy in comparison?

"The RAF Lancaster is the bomber of the war. The B17 was a toy compared to it." Oh don't MAKE me whip out a B-29
