Jerusalem Biblical Zoo (Elephants)

Video Title : Jerusalem Biblical Zoo (Elephants)
Description : Asian Elephant Scientific name: Elephas maximus In the wild: Endangered species Jerusalem zoo: The Asian elephant's distribution is from Western India to Eastern Indonesia. The Indian sub-species, which is exhibited here, prefers partial or fully forested areas. An elephant spends three-quarters of its life eating. It needs 75-115 kilos of food per day and about 80-160 liters of water. They eat mainly grass, leaves, bark and soft branches. The family groups consist of females and young calves led by an elder matriarch. Herds consist of 5 to 120 individuals. The males usually live alone or in small bachelor herds. Usually they are with the maternal families only during musth. The elephant is the largest land mammal, weighing between 2000-5000 kg, the elephant can grow as tall as 3.5 meters. Every so often, the males excrete a liquid from glands above their eyes, show unpredictable, usually aggressive behavior, and drip urine. This is called "musth" and is probably sexual in nature, as it occurs only in mature bulls. "Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold" Chronicles 2: 9, 17 Elephant husbandry methods in Zoos There are different methods of husbandry of the Asian Elephants in zoo around the world and at the different elephant conservation centers. Direct contact - No separation between elephants and keepers. This method has great advantages for elephant welfare, but, because of the proximity of the large elephants to the keepers, the risks to the keepers are relatively high. Protected contact - All work with the elephants is done from behind bars. This method keeps the keepers better protected, but work with elephants is more limited. No contact - No contact between elephants and keepers. This method offers maximum safety to the keepers and is cheaper to implement, but it compromises elephant welfare. Most check-ups and treatments need to be conducted under anesthesia, which is extremely risky. Here in Jerusalem zoo they work with direct contact method
