both. if the shuttle is high in the air on the opponents side it is better to be side by side so that you cover the surface of the court so you can return a potential smash. if its high in the air on ur side, one runs back while one goes in front so that short shots and long can be handled effectively

It depends on the circumstances. If you hit a shot that will most likely result in an attacking return, you play sides (so that most of the court is covered). If they play a shot that you will attack, the person who didn't attack should cover the net. As the return will most likely be another lift, or a weak net shot.

It depends. If there you just hit a high shot which will most likely result in an attacking shot at you, it is best to be side-by-side. However, if a shot gets lifted to the back one person should take it, while the other covers the night, as the next shot will most likely either be another lift (which your partner will ahve covered) or a weak net shot.
