I've always thought of a spectrum of Canine to Feline animals. I myself think foxes are closer to the feline end of said spectrum than wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs- just so less similar that we find hybridizing them with dogs, wolves, and coyotes impossible.
Take the Gray Fox for example- considered a fox, but it still is listed under Urocyon cinereoargenteus, instead of Vulpes and the following subspecies name.

My father told me he saw one on Eglin Air Force Base public hunting grounds one winter- He said it was melanistic (black). We live in North Western Florida.
