I'm convinced the AK is the best weapon followed by the shotgun. I also used the AK alone for the mercs. P.S. Handled the crawling thing like a pro.

The game calls that alien thing an "Exoshade." I don't know how it is created. It is a creature that attacks from dark places. That shriek that it makes has the ability to temporarily disable the lights, leaving you in the dark and making it harder to see the exoshade.
