well there are direct sequels and prequels, like ff X 2 is a sequel to ff X and for ffVII, theres dirge of cerberus and crisis core.

Yes this is a continuation to ff7, ff8 is not the sequal, any FF game has nothing to do with each other. All the FF games has their own unique story.

Except for Final Fantasy X and X-2 :D
