She also had JATO packs on take-off !!

The Navy did a whole series of landings and takeoffs. From what I recall, the plane was fairly heavily loaded. The (US Air Force) pilot got a DFC for the feat. Eventually they decided that striking the entire air group belowdecks or shooting 'em all off to give the Herkybird a clear deck was too much hassle. The C2 Greyhound was subsequently developed .

As someone pointed out to me, I had misremembered something - the pilot on these trials was a US Navy fighter pilot. Just wanted to correct that.

It was a USMC Pilot, actually, iirc.

Negative on the USMC pilot. It was Navy Lt James Flatley...look it up.

I read about this when I was a teenager. The plane landed in 300ft using his reverse propellor's then took off in 700ft with the carrier at full speed, all of this to demonstrate that it could be done.
