Lemmings in DHTML on the Nokia N800 internet tablet
Description :
This video shows DHTML Lemmings running on the Nokia N800 internet tablet's web browser.
DHTML Lemmings is a clone of some Lemmings levels which is made entirely of HTML and Javascript. In effect, this game is made in exactly the same way as most modern websites, and to run the game you simply go to the DHTML Lemmings website using a Javascript-compatible browser.
Javascript isn't Java, JS is normally just used for adding simple things like headline tickers and dropdown menus to websites.
The downside of doing it this way is that the device running DHTML Lemmings has to be pretty powerful, far more powerful than if it was running the game as a native application. DHTML is an inefficient way of implementing a relatively complex game, so it's impressive that it has been done so perfectly.

pointless, a 286 runs it better
It was done mainly as an interesting exercise in DHTML, to see if a game like this could be written in this way.
It's astonishing that it even runs, considering the method used to program it.
Whats the point? The experiment failed. Noone is going to want to play a game that runs so slow even. Even on a phone.
You know when the Wright brothers created the first aeroplane and flew a few yards in a field, do you think that was a waste of time because it had no practical purpose?
The point of an experiment is to show something is possible, even if it doesn't work 100% first time round. This showed that it is possible to write a game in DHTML, which is quite an amazing achievement.
The programmer didn't get any money for DHTML Lemmings, it was done entirely for fun.
This is flat out amazing to me. I remember this game. You did this in DHTML? I'm totally impressed.
It is an amazing achievement, but I didn't do the game!
All I did was point the N800's web browser at the website that hosted the game, and then filmed it running.
I believe the name of the programmer who did this is Tino Zijdel, from the Netherlands.
