Nah, that's the famous Halibrand quick-change diff. That rear cover comes off, allowing one to swap the two helical gears around for different ratios, in minutes flat. Awesome design, but really rare nowadays.

My dad bought a slightly used 1941 Packard 120 with a really big straight eight flathead engine and 3-speed column shift when I was about 5 or 6 years old. We kept it until I was old enough to drive in about 1949 or 1950, and I learned to drive with it and took my driving exam for my first license in it. Dad later traded it in on a 1950 Buick Special with a smaller straight eight and Dynaflow automatic tranny that wasn't half the car that the old pre-war Packard was.
