Unlike the monarchs in Vienna, St. Petersburg and London, Napoleon as the son of provincial lawyer could never claim to derive authority from descent. He enjoyed complete loyalty of the army. His brilliant military strategies won him control of most of Europe. The conquered people of Europe finally banded together to defeat Napoleon.
