Back when I was a kid, I remember Nintendo Power saying you should visit the Moon last. And because of that, I couldn't help but hear this music and think of it as saying, "You're nearing the end of this journey."
The other stage-themes are lighthearted or adventurous, like you still have a long way to go on your journey. With the Moon theme, you know it's almost over, and you don't want it to be.
That's my opinion on the beauty of this tune.
