Plymouth was so far ahead of its time when they brought this car out in the fall of 1956, so they advertised it as what a 1960 car was supposed to look like.
According to some sources, this was supposed to actually be Plymouth's 1960 model, but it was moved up three model years in order to trump its competition!
Those same sources said that GM's styling departments caught much flak for failing to keep up with (then #3) Plymouth.

I forgot to mention - the closeup of the right headlight and turn signal hints at what was supposed to be on that car - quad headlights, which weren't legalized until the 1958 model year.
"Christine" (a 1958 Plymouth) had the quad lights where the high beams replaced the turn signals, which were moved down to just above the bumper.
