This clip is taken from the 1980 TV-movie version of the stage play "The Shadow Box". The original play was written by Michael Cristofer and made its Broadway debut in 1977. The TV-movie version is directed by Paul Newman.
The play narrates a couple of days in the lives of three terminally ill patients and their families living in a hospice. Christopher Plummer plays one of the three dying people, Brian, a writer who lives with his boyfriend Mark. In the two days narrated by the play, Brian is interviewed about the process of dying, presumably by a psychological counselor of the hospice. Then he receives the visit of his exuberant ex-wife Beverly (Joanne Woodward), who meets Mark for the first time.
