Finally, in 1715, the Venetians handed over the island to the Turks by a special treaty. In 1903, the Cretan Republic made Spinalonga a colony for the lepers of Crete, that subsequently closed in 1957.

I visited the island a long time ago and I enjoyed it very much Ther is a book out now called THE ISLAND and it is based on Spinalonga...about someone who was there as a leper. It is a REALLY GOOD BOOK...I cannot remember who wrote it. It was a Richard and Judy book but that is not why I bought it...I bought it because I had visited Spinalonga

The book The Islad is written by Victoria Hislop, I´m reading this book and I want to visit Spinalonga!

i went to crete over the summer for an 18-30 holiday and im pretty sure the booze cruise goes past this island! they told me it was reopening this year for gingers :( haha

this is a great video. reminds me of when i went there and through the tunnel. the whole thing, about the lepra`s is sad. but i think u should have put slow music on because its a sad island. but good vid
