I don't think so; I'd notice if a piece got slipped onto the board, or the position changed illegally because the position just wouldn't feel right. It exists in my head as much as on the board, and when they don't match, you notice. And I'm no grandmaster.

Hikaru is arguable the best blitz player in the world...especially at 1 minute games....

a magician would kill at speed chess, sleight of hand would destroy even the greatest of grandmasters "Hah! Now I mate you with my queen... wait, where... when did you..."

Shitloads of experience, they've played a lot of similar games before this, so they know the patterns. Still insane of course.
