I filmed the last 5 minutes of our final approaching to Minneapolis International Airport (MSP) in a Bombardier CRJ900. This was Northwest flight #3458 out of Houston, Texas. You can see some nice views of the Minneapolis area lakes, including Lake Calhoun, which is walking distance from our apartment.
To answer your question about what FPM= "soft landing" the least FPM possible would be the softest landing. There is now way to measure that small of an amount from a VSI. For piece of mind 100-300 FPM would be firm 400-600 would be on the "hard landing" side and anything much over 600 or 700 FPM would probably require an inspection on most airline jets today. The fighters landing on carriers are over a thousand a minute, beefy gears.
i fly the 900 for nwa airlink (mesaba) in minni, never have seen what it looks like from a passenger perspective, thanks....
Hey, i got a question for you sir, what FPM would you consider to be a soft landing
hmmm...I don't genrally look at that but a good 5 -7 seconds from 50 feet to touchdown...anything more than 1000 FPM under 1000 feet and the landing is not stabilized
ok thanks, i was just wondering because i fly on the simulators, because im not old enough to fly yet, and i normally land with a VS FPM of around -20 to -50 FPM, but yesterday i pulled -3FPM in a CRJ200. Thanks alot man
