Lasker actually held the world title for 27 years.Quite a lot longer than Alekhine or Aljechin depending on how you choose to spell it

Alekhine actually died in his sleep in a Paris hotel. He was totally broke and would not even been able to afford steak if he wanted it :))

This is a great lesson to learn in chess!

Fischer was obviously an amazing player, one of the best of all time. But I don't think he's quite the Chess-God that some people seem think he is. Because he won the title from the Russians, because he was a prodigy, because he was eccentric, people apparently deified him. He was great, but I think Kasparov was better.

inflation has raised elo 200 points since 1972 when fischer was at his peak. therefor fischers 2785 elo would now be 2985 elo and there would be no argument. also the only way to be accurate about whos the best is to access players at there peak and how much was the gap between them and the second best player. in 1972 fischer was 125 elo points better than the second best spassky. kasparov was never this much better than number two in the world. therefor i conclude fischer was the greatest.

Kasparov - a great player, but also known for bad sportmanship (infamously touching a piece and denying it in 1994 match with Judith Polgar; his giving away the 19 moves game against Deep Blue which he later admitted in an interview; keeping certain players out of tournaments he took part in; his public outburst at young Radjabov; the list is longer)

Fischer was overall a difficult person to say the least, but everyone agrees he was 100% sportmanslike at the chessboard

Aljechin, Alekhine, Botvinik, Tal, Spassky, Fisher, & Kasparov they are very great, legndary plyers its depnd on their era. Its hard to compare their abilty of their game & moves in 1800century 1920s,1960s,1970s,1980s, & the moves are diferent today a lot of variations are obsolete (doubt moves !?). But in terms of rating Kasparov is the highest rating of all time! & recorded in the FIDE, Chess Magazines, & Guiness book. Therefore I conclude Kasparov is # 1.
