The foundation stone of Valletta was laid by the Grandmaster of the Order of Saint John, Jean Parisot de la Valette, on 28 March 1566; The Order was the long-time ruler of Malta. Valletta boasts many buildings from the 16th century and onwards, but most of them were built during the time of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (the Knights Hospitaller, or Knights of Malta).

Beautiful. Valetta is a hidden gem. As is Mdina. Reminds me why I will always refer to myself as half-maltese.

As regards to Hotels the island is really equipped with very good ones. Valletta is really a world class sites with its rich history and class. What Malta really needs is to expose its history of 7000 years to the world. Its the smallest state in the Mediterennean Sea with the longest and richest history all in 29 square miles!
Valetta is world-class, like Rio de Janeiro or Venice.
some people dont actually know this but Malta has the oldest standing stoneage temples in the world...older than the piramids!
I hear that Malta needs to update a lot of its hotels. Valetta is a world-class site. But, Sliema has an ugly water front.
well im Maltese and what i can tell you is we have some excellent hotels... also crappy ones but obviously you get what you pay for.... so if you go for a three star hotel dont expect luxuries... this is the usual problem and also you cannot compare stars like for example... a 5 star hotel in the uk is actually not a 5 star hotel in Malta is actually a 4 star superior... makes a difference but people dont seem to notice
