Inlet guide vanes would on the P&W J52 would stop him before he hit the compressor blades. Such vanes are used in most engines on small military aircraft. The flames out the rear are caused by the air to fuel ratio getting screwed up. (and perhaps something getting sucked through)
Still, that must be some impact. He's lucky to be alive.
