I think it's great that Condoleezza would recognize the recent history of the U.S relations with Central and South America countries for what they are, and then proclaim that the U.S. supports any democratically elected government regardless of its economic policy. She also spoke of her approval of CAFTA in implementing a mixed economic system which would show respect for social justice and cultural traditions. I would hope that would mean that a subsistence farmer, who is living in environmental harmony with the land, would still have the option of being a subsistence farmer without interference from a "vertically integrated" corporation... ...but if she really wanted to help the Latin-Americans "overcome their history with the U.S.", why would she keep as Deputy Secretary Of State, John Negroponte...the very man who, just a little more that 20 years ago, was responsible for propagating those crimes of which Rice spoke. Others in the administration are guilty of these criminal policies as well. Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, was the CIA Deputy Director when the CIA was training and supporting those death squads which terrorized the local populace. Through torture and assassinations in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, these misguided policies supported by the Reagan administration, continued under the protection of Ambassador John Negroponte. Today Negroponte continues to implement counterproductive policies to peace... including the march to war with Iran. If Condoleezza is to abide by her new-found integrity, and be a true diplomat to the Latin-American world, she must advise John Negroponte to resign his position as Deputy Secretary of State.

Condoleezza Rice is such a good denier. If the US is willing to deal with Left countries as long as they are democratically elected, why the involvement in the de-stabilization against Chavez? She sounds so sympathetic, and even as though she is NOT denying things, when she actually is. Death squads, Diana Ortiz, etc. are too much to be dismissed with "our more difficult history".
